Welcome to Auckland Art Gallery Toi o Tāmaki’s website dedicated to Gottfried Lindauer’s celebrated portraits of 19th century Māori rangatira: men and women who continue to inspire today. This is a place for their stories.

We invite you to explore their fascinating histories along with Lindauer’s other paintings imagining Māori life.

Read the heartfelt comments of Māori tūpuna and viewers in the Visitors’ Book, listen to interviews with descendants, learn about how Lindauer made the paintings, and contribute your comments and engage in discussion.

Visitors' Book

The Lindauer Art Gallery Māori Visitors’ Book is a remarkable document. Spanning the years 1901 to 1918, it contains hundreds of poignant comments written in te reo Māori by visitors to the gallery.

This extraordinary record provides a window into Māori engagement with their tūpuna through the Partridge Collection. See their handwritten stories, and read the original responses or their translations.
