Dear Sir
Allow me to express the pleasure it gave me to inspect your
valuable collection of paintings representing so many Maori Chiefs.
I can testify to the faithfulness of the likenesses of those I knew
in days gone by. It was my fortune to know Tamati Waka Nene so long
ago as 1845 at Hokianga when he did war against Heke before we had
any troops to put in the field. It may interest you to knows that
Waka Nene was the recipient (of a valuable silver presentation)
from the Queen in recognition of his faithful services- which is
thus inscribed:
The Queen of England
To Her Loyal Subject
And Friend
Na Tamati Waka Nene
June, 1861
as you will see by the enclosed photograph of the presentation
which pray accept from me.

NB - Mr Swanson at our joint inspection of your paintings was
