Mete Kingi.

A principal chief of the Whanganui tribes. He took the part of the Europeans during the fighting in that District. He was dubbed a General, but he certainly did not display the ability or courage of Major Keepa. His loyalty to the Queen was of advantage to us, as he used his influence in restraining large numbers of his people from joining the enemy.

He sat as a Maori Member in Parliament but was not of much value as a representative of his race. In other respects he was an average specimen of the old Maori chief.
