I wrote to Mr A Good and thanked him for furnishing the information re Te Ua- and asked him if he could give any further particulars of his career.

I was looking through the late Dr Shortlands book on New Zealand and discovered splendid likenesses of the celebrated chiefs Te Rauparaha and Rangihaeata- from drawings of E. L Sutherland R N. The tatoo on Rangihaeata's face is full and that of Te Rauparaha almost so. They have feathers in the hair and and suspended from the left ear. These were the actors in the Wairau massacre on 17th June 1843. I saw Te Rauparaha when he was a prisoner on board HMS Calliope and the likeness is a very correct one. Rangihaeata fought against us at the Hutt and Whanganui in 1847. Te Rauparaha ostensibly took no part in the war, but letters were intercepted from him to Rangihaeata who was Rauparahas fighting general. Which caused Governor Grey to take a party of sailors and mariner and capture him at Porirua.
