Letter to Captain Halsey

Dear Sir,
At the suggestion of one of our members (Miss O'Neill) and owing to the kindness of Mr H.E. Partridge, the owner of the original painting, I have much pleasure in forwarding you a framed photograph of Lindauer's portrait of the famous Maori chief, Tamati Waka Nene, which I trust you will accept with the best wishes of the Auckland members of the Victoria League.

Although the gift is a very modest one, it is, I think fitting that the "New Zealand" should possess a likeness of Tamati, inasmuch as he was the first and only Maori who had the distinction of being appointed an Honorary Post Captain in the British Navy.

His friendship was of incalculable value to the British and to the Empire in the war against Hone Heke in 1845, and on various other occasions, and at the close of this war, he was presented by the Queen with a silver loving cup as a token of his loyalty and in recognition of his services in bringing about a termination of hostilities.

Tamati Waka Nene was undoubtedly the most picturesque figure of his time, and the portrait of such a famous diplomat and warrior will, I trust, find a place on our Dominion's first battle-ship - especially in view of the honorary position Tamati held in the Navy.
