This interview with Benjamin Pittman explores the life and legacy of his ancestor, the Ngāpuhi rangatira Eruera Maihi Patuone. A great-great-grandson of Patuone, Pittman reflects on the stories, whakapapa and values passed down through generations of his whānau. Raised in Waiotu and taught from an early age about this whakapapa, Pittman grew up with a strong sense of responsibility to preserve and share Patuone’s story.

Patuone’s life witnessed profound changes in Aotearoa, from the arrival of European explorers through to the growth of colonial Auckland. Pittman traces Pautone’s role as a leader, peacemaker, trader, entrepreneur and diplomat, highlighting his involvement in shipping, horse-breeding, intertribal relationships and Māori–Pākehā relations. Pittman also discusses Patuone’s close connections with early missionaries, his baptism in 1840, and the ways in which he embraced Christianity while maintaining Māori values and traditions.

Drawing on both family knowledge and historical sources, Pittman presents Patuone as a rangatira whose leadership helped guide his people through a period of immense change. Pittman also reflects on the enduring importance of remembrance and respect for the achievements of those who came before.
