Takerei Te Rauanganga

A leading Waikato chief of the Ngati mahuta tribe and closely related to the late Maori King Potatau. He was a man of a rather reticent, and sullen disposition, disliked Europeans, and did not care to associate with them. He joined in the Waikato war in 1863 and was one of the three high chiefs taken prisoner at Rangiriri. He was at first confined in the hulk "Marion" with the other captives, but he and Tioriori Te Hura of Ngatihaua were released on "parole" on conditions that they remained within the City of Auckland. Takerei te Rauanganga was a large landowner and lost the whole of his estates by confiscation; this preyed very highly on his mind, and he did not long survive his misfortunes.
